A high pressure fuel pump pressurizes diesel fuel to extremely high pressures. Emissions standards have requierd higher and higher pressures, and new technologies have met the demands. As the pumps get older, they can become problematic. The solenoids can fail And the many seals can start to leak. Leaks are probably the most common problem. Sometimes, they just wear And stop building really high pressures.

Two of the pumps that Cummins used were the CP4 And CP3 pumps from Bosch. The CP4 pumps are newer, but cause more problems. Cummins actually recalled some of their CP4 pumps. The CP3 pumps are considered by most to be bulletproof, And a lot of people will convert engines from a CP4 pump to a CP3 pump.

Cummins also developed their own technology, but they mostly used Bosch high pressure fuel pumps.
